Smoking ban gets final approval in Elkhorn City

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (AP) - Officials in Elkhorn City have given final approval to a proposal to ban smoking in public places in the eastern Kentucky city.

The City Council in the Pike County community passed the second and final reading of the ordinance on Thursday night in a 6-0 vote.

In addition to prohibiting smoking at indoor places, the ordinance would not allow people to light up in outdoor arenas or stadiums or within a "reasonable distance" of the entrance to a public building. Violators can be fined up to $50 for a first offense.

City County member Roxanne Blankenship says people elected her " to make the right decisions for the community" so she voted for the measure.

Officials say they will start enforcing the ban in April.
