UPIKE officials discuss scholarship program with county leaders

The University of Pikeville is in talks with several eastern Kentucky counties about using coal severance money to fund a new scholarship program.

This would revive a similar proposal that died in this year's legislative session.

Former governor and UPIKE President Paul Patton tells the Courier Journal that he's spoken with six county judge executives about applying for a grant from the state's multi-county coal severance fund.

The grant would pay for scholarships to Pikeville and other colleges.
