Valley Elementary students bring Christmas to Pike Co. nursing home

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Students at Valley Elementary School have been collecting items and putting together gift bags since October. On Thursday they got to deliver those gift bags. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders went from floor to floor spreading Christmas cheer at Parkview Nursing Home.

Third grade teacher Erica Johnson explains why they decided to do this project, "We wanted to be able to spread Christmas with people in our community."

The students made Christmas cards and filled gift bags with magazines, coloring books, slippers, stuffed animals, and various hygiene products. While delivering the gift bags on Thursday, the kids filled the halls of the nursing home with Christmas carols. Parkview Activities Director Kristy Stratton says, "The residents love it, getting to see the little kids and hear them singing."

The students have been looking forward to this day. Fifth grader Hayden Osborne says, "I was just excited to see their reactions when they opened the bags." Another fifth grader, Makayla Gillispie adds, "making them feel like they are never too old for Christmas and everyone cares."

They learned an important lesson through it all and remembered the true reason for the season. Gillispie explains, "Christmas isn't the time for receiving, it is the time for giving and caring about each other and praising Jesus." Osborne says he enjoyed the experience, "I love giving to these people because they would smile and say Merry Christmas."

Teachers say they received an overwhelming amount of donations and want to thank everyone who helped make this happen.
