PIKE Co., Ky. (WYMT) - President Obama described Monday's shooting at the U.S. Navy Yard near our nation's capital as a "cowardly act."

The incident is considered one of the worst attacks on an U.S. military base since Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009.

From 1949 until 1952 Vietnam War Veteran Charles Sluss worked as a movie operator at the same area shots were fired.

Sluss said he is unable to grasp how or why this happened

"It was just another routine Monday until I heard the news," said Sluss.
"I thought how in the world could they do something like that?"

While the media continues to break down the limited information, he said he is just trying to make since of the situation.

"They shot from the third floor I believe," Sluss said. "That's where we slept."

In order to stop incidents like this one from reoccurring he said increased awareness is a must.

"Tighten up the security, tighten up everything," Sluss said. "I mean outside security, not only on the bases."

There is no word yet on a motive for the shooting.
