Man shot in home invasion

Investigators are now searching for the man who broke into the Barnes Mill Road home early Friday morning. Police say he demanded money, and then shot 45-year-old Akil Abdullah, who was a guest at the house, in his leg.

Police say just after 3:00am the suspect kicked in the front door to the home of Steven Kalinyak. "The male suspect demanded money and said something like, 'where's the person who has the money?' says Richmond Police chief Larry Brock.

That's when Kalinyak and his girlfriend got out of the house through a window, and got into the car to call police. But the house guest, Akil Abdullah, was still inside. "The guest indicated he did not have any money and at that point the suspect shot him in the left leg near the knee" says Brock.

Police found the victim at a nearby hotel, his leg wrapped in a towel.
Neighbors who live in the area say it's a frightening situation. "I'll make sure to check all the doors at night, look around. I don't know who it was or what they're capable of or what they're after."

Police say this does appear to be an isolated incident. They believe the gunman did know the people in the home. Police say they are working on a couple of leads in the case.
