Suspicious man sparks safety bulletin on EKU campus

A public safety bulletin has been issued for the Eastern Kentucky University campus in Richmond after an incident Sunday night.

EKU officials say around 11:30 p.m., four female students told police a man followed them through the Burnam Hall parking lot.

While EKU Police were investigating that, two female students told them a man, matching the same description, exposed his genitals to them near the smoking shack at Walters Hall.

Police checked that area, but couldn't find the suspect.

EKU Police say the suspect is a white man, around 6 feet tall, weighing around 175 pounds, who has medium length black hair. Police say the man was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and glasses.

EKU officials passed along the following safety precautions for students and staff on campus:

Immediately report suspicious persons loitering around University facilities.

If you become the victim of a crime, do not try to physically detain or apprehend the criminal. Report the incident immediately to the EKU Police Department at 911 or (859) 622-1111.

Stay alert and trust your instincts - If you feel uneasy, leave.

On or off campus, walk/jog/bike in groups of three or more in well-lit and well-traveled areas. After dark on campus, call the campus shuttle or for a walking escort.

Scan the area before you exit or approach your vehicle/building and while you proceed between sites.

Have your key ready in hand to quickly access the door of your vehicle/building.

If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant. If they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number, if possible.

Lock doors and windows of your room/building. Do not prop open doors or let strangers in.
