An assistant high school football coach faces charges after police say he sexually abused a student and sent sexually explicit text messages to others.
Police arrested 34-year-old Joey Tate, a former teacher at Madison Southern High School in Berea, after investigating some complaints. Police say Tate resigned when asked about the complaints.
Tate is now charged with sexual abuse and attempted unlawful transaction with a minor. The arrest citation shows the alleged victims were his students.
Police arrested Tate last week.
Investigators say he attempted to get a minor, whom he was teaching at Madison Southern, to engage in sexual activity with him.
In the arrest citation police also said he rubbed a student's thigh and grabbed her butt while they were alone in a classroom.
Police say he also sent sexually explicit text messages to other female students.
"We send our children to a safe place to learn and unfortunately situations like this arise but actions were taken at a quick pace and everything seems to be going back to normal," says Sergeant Lee Ann Boyle with the Berea Police Department.
The school is not commenting on the arrest.
27 NEWSFIRST spoke with Tate. He says he is not allowed to discuss this situation.
