Awoken in the middle of the night to see two burglars in her home on Linden Street in Richmond mom grabs her knife and gives chase.
Although Smith didn't have to use her machete, named Bessy, she says she was fully prepared to do so.
She says as soon as they saw the blade they ran out the same way they came in. Police would later find her prescription blood pressure medicine and a watch in the street nearby.
So far no arrests have been made, but police do have suspects.
Major Bob Mott with the Richmond Police Department says in the same neighborhood there have been 3 or 4 burglaries in the past few weeks.
William Sparks, who has lived the neighborhood for 25 years, says he recently bought a gun for protection.
Police don't condone the use of weapons against intruders saying it could be dangerous if the burglar is also armed, but Mott does understand a right to protect yourself and you home.
