BEREA, Ky. (AP) - The central Kentucky city of Berea has been recognized for achieving an initial milestone in a program to conserve energy, reduce its carbon footprint and advance sustainability.
The city says it has completed an inventory of energy use within the city and inside city government. That inventory is one of five milestones in a process set by an association of local governments known as ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability. The group was formerly known as International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives.
Berea says it is the first location in Kentucky to reach the achievement. The city is now working to develop its plan, which is scheduled for completion in May.
The Berea Energy Cost-Savings Plan is being funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission with the local match provided by in-kind services.
