BEREA, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say when the parent-teacher organization at Silver Creek Elementary elected a new treasurer for the upcoming school year, they discovered a big problem.
"It was brought to our attention that some money was missing from the Silver Creek Elementary PTO organization. The amount was $12,150," said Sgt. Jake Reed of the Berea Police Department.
The PTO began looking into the previous treasurer, Ashley Duerson.
"They started doing some digging and brought it to our attention that the money was missing and we started working with them and eventually found out that Ms. Duerson had taken it," said Reed.
Police say while Duerson was treasurer, there were five fundraising events and she was responsible for depositing all the money raised, as well as paying bills and distributing profits as directed by PTO officers.
"From my understanding, there was some that was deposited, some money that was deposited, but then this amount was not," said Reed.
Police issued an arrest warrant for Duerson Friday. They say she turned herself in at the Madison County Detention Center and bonded out a short time later. When reached by phone, PTO officials said they had no comment.
