Church digs up time capsule

A time capsule sealed for more than 50 years was just recently cracked open in a Central Kentucky town.

From a rusted copper box inside Union City Baptist Church, comes pictures and print outs from half a century past.

"This is one of the bulletins. Now this is what the church looked like before we put the vestibule on. Of course this is the Richmond Register," describes church member Johnny Covington, an 11-year-old when the time capsule was sealed, "being eleven years old back then, I probably was just excited to have all the kids around playing with them. I remember a great deal about that day. It was really quite a day."

"It was really neat. It really was because you think about the ones that came before us here," says William Hendricks, "we've tried to continue what they started 200 years ago in spreading Word to our community."

Come this summer, the congregation will once again compile memories and notes for others to open.

Union City Baptist Church celebrates its 200th anniversary Sunday.
