Firefighter recovering after being struck by a car

Updated: Wed 7:04 PM, Feb 22, 2012

At any accident scene, you'll see the flashing lights, the reflective suits, along with the giant red truck.

"What's bigger on the road than a fire truck, you can't miss it, " says Richmond Fire Chief, Buzzy Campbell.

Despite all of these warnings for drivers, sometimes it's not enough.
"There's many, many close calls that don't get reported or people that don't get struck but that we want to bring attention to. Just because of the fact that it is dangerous and people need to be paying attention to their driving and not what's going on, on the side of the road," says Major Bob Mott, with Richmond Police.

Battalion Chief, Sidney Lynch was on the scene of a vehicle fire on the Eastern Bypass at Killarney Lane and I-75 last night when it happened,"He was alerted that the car was coming. He had time to move enough out of the way but was still struck by the mirror," adds Campbell.

Lynch was treated at the hospital for an arm injury, and Richmond Fire Chief, Buzzy Campbell is relieved because it could have been worse, "If it had hit him facing the other direction, he could have been hurt very badly."

The driver that hit Lynch, Solomonworth McQuire was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment.

Battalion Chief, Lynch is recovering from those injuries and is expected to return to his normal schedule.

Officials say that McQuire was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and likely took his eyes off the road or became distracted by something in the car.
