FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The state has certified its first five Kentucky Cultural Districts.

The Kentucky Arts Council says the five are Berea, Covington, Danville, Horse Cave and Paducah. Independent reviewers chose the cities from a pool of 26 applicants.

Arts Council Executive Director Lori Meadows said in a statement that all the communities that applied have made headway in making the most of their cultural assets.

The Kentucky program is designed to showcase a community's character and assets. The council defines a cultural district as a "well-recognized, labeled, mixed-use area of a community featuring a high concentration of cultural amenities that attract local residents and visitors alike."
