MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Madison County man faces charges after sheriff's deputies say he made a child his designated driver.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested Robert Buckner, 41, of Madison County.

The sheriff's office says an off-duty deputy noticed a car on Francis Drive being driven by a child.

He could barely see over the steering wheel, but that didn't keep an 11-year-old from being the designated driver Monday night Buckner.

But Jeff Singleton, who says he knows the child and is friends with Buckner, also tells us the child isn't in trouble, just Buckner is.

"I mean it's not his fault," said Jeff Singleton, a witness. "It's the one that let him do it!"

Possibly knowing he was too drunk to drive, deputies tell us Buckner let a child get behind the wheel at a Shell station, making him drive half of a mile down the road.

"He was totally drunk," said Singleton.

We are told an off-duty sheriff's deputy saw a Suzuki drive by her home and could barely see the driver. Coincidently, they pulled into a driveway on her street. We are also told Buckner was extremely intoxicated, more than triple the legal limit.

Because of this incident, Singleton says he's no longer friends with Buckner.

"No, no. There's no way in hell he's coming back here," said Singleton. "Absolutely not. He's not welcome back."

Knowing something much worse could have happened on Monday, they aren't going to take any chances with Buckner.

"He could have wrecked or hit someone or killed someone or killed the both of them. And I don't want that. I don't want that on my shoulders," said Singleton.

Buckner is booked in the Madison County Detention Center, charged with wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor.
