Man accused of putting rat poison in wife's coffee

According to an arrest citation, William Cain admitted putting rat poison in his wife's coffee in an attempt to kill her. He said the marriage was deteriorating and he just couldn't take it anymore.

"All I have for that man is pure hate. I have nothing. No love. No compassion for that man whatsoever," says his wife, Deborah.

Deborah Cain says she never wants to speak to her husband again after police say he tried to kill her. She says she knew something wasn't right when he made her coffee yesterday morning, something she says he never does.

"He kissed me and told me he loved me. And then whenever I got up, I seen the coffee was made. Even across the room it didn't look right. It was real dark and it was a green color," she says.

Police arrested William Cain yesterday afternoon. According to the citation, he said Mrs. Cain "argued with him over everything and he couldn't take it anymore". Deborah says he'd been having an affair. She takes blood thinner medication that has small amounts of rat poison as an ingredient. She believes he tried to kill her with rat poison so that police would think she'd overdosed on her medication.

"It would have looked like that I had taken more Coumadin than I should have took. I'm just thankful to be alive," she says.

Mrs. Cain says she's also filed an emergency protective order against her husband. If convicted on the attempted murder charge, Cain could face ten to twenty years behind bars.
