People who live near Fifth Street in Richmond say they've seen an increase in burglaries recently. Now that police say they've arrested the man responsible for five of them, they hope the problems stop.
Richmond Police say 23-year-old Justin Baird is responsible for a string of burglaries adding up to over $10,000 in stolen items since March. People who live here say what's most disturbing is that the thief may have been hiding in plain sight.
"I was thinking it was probably going to be somebody from no telling where," says Phillip Hackworth.
Baird lives on Fifth Street, where two of the five burglaries happened. The others were on Third Street, Moberly Avenue, and Lyndale Avenue. Hackworth lives on Lyndale and was burglarized back in February.
"My thought process was I wanted to hurt somebody because they took a pistol that my daddy had left to me and that meant a lot to me," he says.
He says he's noticed Baird near his home in the past.
"I just noticed him walking around here and riding a bike," says Hackworth.
Police say Baird isn't charged for Hackworth's burglary, but they're still investigating. Hackworth says if the thief is still out there, he just has one request.
"Whoever stole my dad's gun, if they'll just drive by and throw it back in the yard I'll be happy!"
Police say they were able to recover some, but not all, of the stolen property. They say the burglaries happened during the daytime hours while no one was home.
