RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Parents had the chance to learn more about plans to learn more about plans to start an all-day kindergarten in Madison County next year.
School leaders held a parent information meeting Monday night in Richmond. The plan, approved by the Madison County Board of Education earlier this month calls for closing Mayfield Elementary School, and turning it into a kindergarten academy.
Parents tell us they have mixed feelings about the plans.
"I think it's a great idea, it will give teachers more time with the students, more time for education curriculum," says Caroline Hicks.
"I just really feel there could have been other options explored and there could have been a different thing to do than close down a school and transferring 300 plus students," says Shana Goggins.
Kingston, Waco, and Shannon Johnson Elementary Schools will also have kindergarten academies, but those schools will remain open to older students as well. School leaders say this plan relieves overcrowding.
