New details on deadly crash involving mom and children

The Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash on Kentucky 21, near Indian Fort Theater, that killed a 25-year-old woman.

They say Melissa Horn's pickup hit a van around 5:00 p.m. Horn, who is from Jackson County, apparently lost control and over corrected. The van, driven by 62-year-old Cowley Lewis of McKee, ended up on its side.

Madison County Sheriff's Deputy Willard Reardon says several factors could have led to the crash. "Right now it looks like traveling too fast, the roads were wet, loss control and ended up in a head on collision. We had to call rescue in and actually use the jaws of life to extricate those people, especially in the Ford pickup truck."

Deputies say Horn had her three children with her. They say the children, ages 4, 7, and 8, were all taken to the UK Medical Center, where they are in critical condition. The Sheriff's Office says none of the children were restrained in seat belts nor car seats.

Lewis is also at UK in critical condition.

A Madison County Sheriff's Deputy tells 27 NEWSFIRST Horn, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not wearing a seat belt.
