A Richmond detective told a judge Wednesday that John Payne confessed to shooting his fiancée and mother even before detectives knew anything about two dead bodies inside his home.
Richmond Police Detective Keith Daniel told the judge they were looking for John Payne because he had failed to comply with sex offender registration. An anonymous caller told them to look for him at the Days Inn in Berea.
When they got there, Detective Daniel says Payne told them he had shot his fiancée and his mother. After further questioning, Detective Daniel says Payne told them it was all an accident, and that he accidentally shot his mother in one room and then his girlfriend in another. "He advised after the incident occurred he collected the guns and her vehicle and drove away from the scene."
The judge found probable cause to send the case to the grand jury.
