Richmond Police have charged 24-year-old Matthew Deatherage of Lawrenceburg with stealing a woman's purse from Walmart in December.
The woman reported, on December 31, that her purse, containing personal identification documents and a debit card, was stolen from her cart while she was shopping during the early afternoon hours. The suspect was later described as a white male, wearing a dark colored sweatshirt, dark pants, and a blue and green baseball cap. He exited the store and entered what appeared to be a small tan SUV.
It was later determined that the stolen debit card had been used three times at Kroger, shortly after the theft. Richmond Police say it was used to buy more than $300 worth of goods.
On Monday an off-duty Richmond Police officer at Walmart say Deatherage in the store and recognized him as the suspect in the theft case. The officer approached Deatherage and detained him, at which time police say Deatherage provided a false name and date of birth to the officer. He was subsequently identified as Deatherage and it was determined that an outstanding warrant for his arrest was active from Anderson County.
Police say Deatherage was also identified as a suspect in several similar thefts being investigated by Kentucky State Police and other agencies.
Richmond Police charged Deatherage with theft by unlawful taking under $500, fraudulent use of a credit card under $500, and for giving police a false name or address. Additional theft charges were also placed against Deatherage by KSP.
