Police search for man caught trying to steal money from hotel

Caught in the act and caught on camera, a would be thief left behind more than money at a Richmond hotel.

It was on October 1 when La Quinta Inn manager Kyle Moon says the unidentified man was in the hotel lobby just wandering around while guests were eating breakfast.

After telling Moon about a toilet that was overflowing, the man is seen on surveillance video pacing near the office, before going in.

"For safety reasons I go check, sure enough, he's crouched behind the counter taking money out of the drawer," said Moon.

Moon says the man was crouched down behind the counter out of view of the guests. When confronted, he tried to play off the incident like it was a joke and gave the money back.

As he left he showed Moon that he didn't have any other cash and then begged him to not call police. But Moon did and now they're looking for him over this attempted theft.

"Seems like the last thing you want to do is try to commit a crime like that while there's a lobby full of people," said Moon.

This man left the La Quinta Inn in a red Mazda with a temporary tag 629556. Richmond Police say if you know who he is give them a call at 859-623-1162.
