RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - On August 3rd and September 5th, heavy rains caused several areas of Richmond to flood, and in some places it got pretty deep.

Since then, city leaders began asking residents to send in photos of flood prone areas, and the response was quick. The city quickly identified 25 low lying spots that are prone to flooding. Those locations are now the focus of the planning and zoning department as they look to address the issues.

In some places, the city says it's an issue of old, or out dated, piping that cannot handle the amount of water, some date back to the early 1900s. Kevin Causey, a Planning and Zoning Inspector, says the city is looking to replace those lines with more efficient pipes that can handle the current amount of water.

Causey said the photos sent in by residents really helped express the issues many people face when it rains.

"We knew in the past that we had some trouble, but we never knew the caliber of the problem (until the photos were submitted). So now that we know the caliber of the problem in those specific areas, we can now start to do the detective work on what is causing it," stated Causey.

Robbin Carey, is one of those residents whose yard turns into a wetland and her neighbors' basements flood because her home sits at the low spot of the street. Carey said these repairs are welcome sign.

"Now, they're down here and we're grateful for that and we're hoping it will improve, but we don't have any guarantees until the next rain."

Causey said the work is being funded by grants that Richmond has been given for the work.

He went on to say that in some places, because of the geography, his department is considering the use of "water gardens." Causey explains that a water garden uses plants that slow down the flow of water and filter it into a central drainage spot.

The project is expected to take some time, but the city says they are focused on helping the residents living or working near these 25 troubling spots.
