State champions welcomed home in Madison County

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Sunday was one for the history books at Madison Central High School as students, parents and players celebrated their big win against Ballard.

The school held a pep rally Sunday night to welcome home the state champions.

As the seconds on the scoreboard counted down during the game, Central fans were crossing their fingers in hopes that their team would win it all.

“With a few seconds to go, one of the boys next to me said ‘I don't know if we are going to get this, we need a miracle’ and we got it!” said Jennifer Tipton, the school nurse.

Not only was the last minute win unexpected, it was also unprecedented

“It’s first time ever for Central to be in the championship game and the first time ever for any Madison County team in basketball to win the state championship,” said Gary Fritz, the school’s former athletic director.

The basketball players made a big entrance at the pep rally as they pulled into the parking lot atop a fire truck.

Hundreds of fans welcomed the players and cheered them on off the court.

“We are just really excited for our guys they deserve it so much. The seniors have been so hardworking and they just deserve it so we are thrilled for them,” said Brooke Fritz, the Assistant Coach’s wife.

The memories made on Sunday will certainly be ones that everyone at Madison County High School remembers forever.

Fans have even given the basketball players a new nickname--- now referring to them as "The Comeback Kids."
