Power knocked out to thousands

Thousands of people spent early Wednesday morning in the dark and cold.

Officials with Kentucky Utilities say 10,000 customers initially lost electricity just before 5 a.m. That outage also caused 1,005 Blue Grass Energy customers to lose power.

By 7 a.m., the KU number was around 5,000; by 11:00am it was down to just 25. Blue Grass Energey had all its impacted customers back on by this morning.

The KU outage affected neighborhoods around the Tates Creek Road and Man o' War Boulevard intersection, along with areas near Wilson Downing and Armstrong Mill Roads.

KU doesn't yet know what caused the outage.

Blue Grass Energy says its outage was caused by the KU transmission failure. That caused an outage at the North Madison substation in Madison County and the South Point substation in Jessamine County.

KU officials says the bitterly cold weather made it harder on crews trying to restore electricity.

Fayette County school officials say the outages didl not affect any schools.
