PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) - It was just after 9 o’clock Tuesday night when the accident happened and when the driver of a pickup truck called for help.
“Yes ma’am, I’ve over here by the jail, I just hit somebody walking,” a man is heard telling a Pulaski 911 dispatcher in a recording obtained by WKYT.
Police say the person the man in his truck hit was 23 year Ileia Johnson..who says she was walking to the store with her 9-month-old son, Triston, who was in a stroller.
In another call, the frantic, chaotic scene is played out as witnesses rushed to help the mother and her baby, who is heard crying in the background.
Johnson and the baby were taken to the hospital.
The child was then airlifted to UK. Johnson was charged with wanton endangerment and taken to jail.
“And I just think that’s ridiculous because I didn’t do anything wrong. I got hit by a truck. I asked them what did you do about the guy? They sent him home,” Johnson said Wednesday from jail.
Police say Johnson was drunk and possibly under the influence of drugs.
“But it’s due to the fact that she put her 9 month old in that type of environment to walk on the traveled portion, to substantiate child endangerment charges,” said Somerset Police Captain Shannon Smith.
The driver of the truck was a 72 year old man. Police say he wasn’t charged; they say there wasn’t anything he could have done to prevent the accident.
Johnson says she was walking on the shoulder and says blood work will prove she wasn’t drunk.
“My kid, he’s got two skull fractures. You’re going to sit up there and try to blame that on me?” Johnson asked.
