Clear Channel Sports has confirmed that Jay Cobb signed and submitted a letter of resignation as head football coach of the Somerset Briar Jumpers on Monday afternoon.
That resignation letter was delivered to Somerset Independent School Superintendent Dr. Teresa Wallace on Tuesday. Wallace, Athletic Director Bob Tucker and Principal Mark Murray all signed off on the coach’s letter, officially ending Cobb’s reign as the Briar Jumper head football coach.
The now accepted and signed resignation wraps up over a decade long run for Cobb at Somerset. In 11 seasons he compiled a 82-48 record, leading the Purple & Gold to four regional titles with a string of three consecutive semi-state appearances in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Cobb was also recognized as the District Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Coaches Association on four different occasions.
When one door closes another opens and it has finally done so for long-time assistant coach Robbie Lucas. On Wednesday, Lucas was named the interim head coach of the Briar Jumpers.
He had already been in charge of team practices since the situation began on Monday.
Two years ago, the players and parents rallied behind Lucas to be named as the Jumpers’ next head coach after then coach Cobb had apparently resigned to take the Henderson County High School job.
You can hear Coach Lucas on Thursdaynight at 7:30 during Clear Channel Lake Cumberland's Annual Coaches Preview Show at the DQ Grill and Chill on Highway 27. Listen to all the coverage on Hometown Talk AM1240 WSFC or Lake 102.3FM.
