It's a sure sign of the start of summer, boaters from across the area will be heading out on the water this Memorial Day Weekend and officials with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife hope they bring safe practices with them.
Officials want to remind experienced and amateur boaters alike that it's required that a boat have life jackets for all passengers and all boaters 12 and under are required to wear the life jackets when a watercraft is in operation.
Wildlife officials says importance of a life jacket was evident when rescue crews spent days on Lake Cumberland looking for 18 year old John Tyler Pickerell.
Pickerell went kayaking on the lake shortly after flooding rains struck the area, he wasn't wearing a life jacket when his body was recovered days later.
Experienced boaters say even the wake from other boats can be enough to tip a smaller boat over, saying when the lake gets crowded like on holidays the chances of something like that happening increase.
Advice from the experts is to respect the lake and be mindful of other boater on the water.
