Business owner donating alarm systems to Pulaski County schools

SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT)- As schools start the new year around Kentucky, safety has become a hot topic in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings.

A question being asked now, should there be armed guards or more high tech security?

For one Pulaski County businessman, the shootings have spurred him to step up and help schools in his area be better prepared for the worst.

When tragedy hit Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut last month it sent shock waves throughout communities all across the country.

In Pulaski County one man knew he wanted to help and has now acted on it.

"I call this program Operation Security Blanket," said David Morris, the President of Modern Systems in Somerset.

Morris has been in the security business for over three decades and last week he was moved to do something for his community when he attended a memorial for the victims of the Newtown shootings.

"The thought came to me what can I do to make a meaningful difference to help protect the kids in this area?" said Morris.

Morris knows school systems have tight budgets when it comes to security, schools many times can only afford access control systems to keep people out and security cameras.

Morris says in his years in business it seems like the missing link has been panic buttons.

Morris' business Modern Systems is donating three panic alarm systems for every school in both the Pulaski County and Somerset school districts.

The panic alarm system is like many you see in banks and can be positioned under counters and out of sight.

Operation Security Blanket will not cost the school systems a dime, David Morris is picking up that cost to ensure students in his community are safer.

"There is not a lot I felt like I could do in Sandy Hook, but I could help the kids here in Somerset and Pulaski County," said Morris.

A program like this is not cheap, it could cost $50,000 to $60,000.

Morris says he is going to encourage other security companies to do this same thing around the country to help make these systems more affordable for schools.
