Christmas at Owens Garden Center

Owens Garden Center, the same local family business you have known for quality bedding plants, hanging baskets, landscaping material and gardening needs since 1986 is celebrating the Christmas season with fresh cut Christmas trees, custom made wreaths, and poinsettias.

Ian Owens, son of Mark Owens the founder of Owens Garden Center, soon realized the need for fresh Christmas décor as it was an inaccessible service in the area. “We hand-picked the trees at the garden center for variety, and for the quality we are known for having.” Mr. Owens went on to say that the trees the family chose had been cut the previous day to ensure longevity, whereas most cut trees have been cut for several months before reaching the consumer. The variety that was chosen was the Fraser Fir, the official variety of the National Christmas Tree Association. The tree gets its name from a Scottish botanist named John Fraser who discovered the tree in the southern part of Appalachia. The National Christmas Tree Association describes the dark blue-green tree as having good needle retention, a compact form, and a pleasant scent.

During the winter, many plants go dormant, causing the landscape to appear bland. To solve this dilemma, many people will decorate with lights, color, and greenery such as wreaths, poinsettias, and garland. You can deck the halls and go all out with beautiful red, pink, white and speckled poinsettias or try a more simplistic look by having a wreath custom wreath made on site. This is a great way to try to personalize and add wow factor to your home during the holidays, without becoming the Griswolds. However if your family loves seeing Christmas lights there may some plans in the making for a lights show at the Garden center next Christmas, that should put the Griswolds to shame.

Owens Garden Center is a firm believer in community involvement, education, and the beautification of the area. Recently, the Somerset Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce held a wreath auction to raise funds to benefit the Somerset Community College by means of scholarships from the proceeds of the auction. Ian Owens, retail manager of Owens Garden Center began his educational journey at the community college where he decided to pursue a double major in horticulture and business to advance in the greenhouse industry. Seeing the benefits in a solid education, Mr. Owens decided to donate an eight foot tree, a tree stand, and a custom fraser wreath to the cause so that other students may also have the opportunities he had as a former student. As a transfer student from the college, Ian Owens has also made an effort to raise funds for the horticulture program at Eastern Kentucky University. With every poinsettia that is sold at Owens Garden Center, they will donate half of their profits to help support the department.

Picking out and decorating the Christmas tree has always been a fun way for busy families to be involved during the holidays and to spend quality time together. There is nothing like the smell of a fresh cut tree, your grandmother’s homemade cookies, or the time you are able to spend with people you love during the holiday season. Whether the time spent together decorating, wrapping gifts, or watching Christmas specials, shopping at one of your local businesses is a great way to get the family together and to help support your local economy.
