SOMERSET, Ky (WKYT) - A knock on her door Sunday told Gladys Napier of her son’s accident at Lake Cumberland, and not long after she saw her son in a way she never expected.

“I seen…. when they brought him out of the water,” said Napier from her Adams Street home Tuesday.

Her 18-year-old son, Tobias, drowned after falling off a ledge and was recovered 60 feet below the surface near the Slate Branch boat ramp Sunday.

“I don’t know what happened. They say he might have slipped in. It was like a 30 foot drop from a ledge,” she said.

Tobias Napier was not an experienced swimmer. In fact his mother says this was his first trip to Lake Cumberland despite growing up in the Somerset area.

“If your kids are going to the lake, make sure they have a life jacket, a phone with them if there is an accident, and you at least know how to swim,” she said.

Tobias will be remembered for his love of football, computers, his family and his fellow man.

“He would do anything for you. Everybody loved him. I’m going to miss my child,” she said, choking back tears.

As if all the grief wasn’t enough, now she has the burden of a funeral to pay for.

“I mean, we need help. Anything anybody can do. We greatly appreciate it,” she said.

Funeral services will take place at 4 p.m. Friday..with visitation at 6 p.m. Thursday at Southern Oaks Funeral home.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home on the 914 by-pass in Somerset is accepting donations on behalf of the family.
