SOMERSET, Ky. (WYMT) - One man is behind bars tonight for assaulting a police officer.
Somerset police say it began as a traffic stop, but ended in a fight between the officer and 21 year old Michael Morton.
Michael Morton says his legs and hand are bandaged from his run through the woods on Thursday.
“I was like let me out of the car right now, let me out. I don't want to do this right now. I can totally out run him just let me out,” said Morton.
He says he was running from a Somerset Police Officer. Police say they were arresting him on outstanding warrants.
“I wasn't thinking at all. I was just freaking out I was like I don't want to go back to jail so I just took off running,” said Morton.
He says that he ran into the woods to try and get away from police, but admits that it made the arrest that much more painful.
“I went the complete wrong way I went straight into a bunch of bushes and shrubs, and completely cut myself all over my legs arms and everything,” said Morton.
But Police say what began as a chase on foot quickly became physical.
“Morton was fighting rather violently, and was able to throw some punches and do some kicking. [He] actually kicked officer Creech in the chest,” said Shannon Smith with the Somerset Police Department.
Morton claims the assault was never intentional saying, “he did swing at me and I think I unintentionally swung at him but I didn't really try to physically hurt him I was just trying to get him off of me,”
Police say the officer suffered minor injuries, and returned to work the next day.
Officers tell us that had Morton cooperated he would have only been charged for failure to appear in court.
However, since he ran from police he is now charged with fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, and a felony charge of assault 3rd degree.
