Postal Service to close Lexington facility

27 Newsfirst has learned that United States Postal Service will shut down it's Lexington processing facility.

Employees at the Nandino Boulevard Post Office tell us they were notified last night of the closure.

The move comes as the postal service looks to close or consolidate thousands of post offices nationwide.

Mail processing services for Lexington will now move to Louisville and Knoxville.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service couldn't say how many employees would be affected, but workers estimated the number at just under 400. Through an agreement with the postal workers union, employees whose jobs are eliminated could choose to move to another processing facility, in this case Louisville or Knoxville. But, the workers say that option presents some problems.

"We're no different from anyone else. We're going to be faced with a situation where a lot of people will be hurting. The price of gas has just shot up again. When you start talking about adding another 40-50 miles one way, just to get to work past where you're working now. Even if you're already driving 40 or 50 miles to get to work, it puts a major financial hardship on people," says postal worker Scott Kays.

Postal officials say they need to cut $20 billion dollars by 2015 in order to stay profitable.

Other Kentucky postal facilities are being affected as well.

• Bowling Green KY Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) to the Nashville TN Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC).
• Campton KY Customer Service Mail Processing Center (CSMPC) to the Louisville KY P&DC.
• Elizabethtown KY CSMPC to the Louisville P&DC.
• Hazard KY CSMPC to the Knoxville TN P&DC.
• Lexington KY P&DC to the Louisville P&DC and the Knoxville P&DC.
• London KY P&DF to the Knoxville P&DC.
• Paducah KY P&DF to the Evansville IN P&DF.
• Somerset KY CSMPC to the Knoxville P&DC.

The Postal Service says all retail, business mail entry, and vehicle maintenance work will continue at these eight locations. So far, there's no timetable for the shutdown.
