PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Pulaski County Sheriff has a close call with a bear after it darts out in front of his cruiser. The whole incident caught on the deputy's dash cam video!

"The deputy was driving along thought a big dog chasing his car," explains Pulaski County detective John Hutchinson, "He slowed down and realized it wasn't a dog, it was a big bear!"

The video shows a big black bear missing the cruiser by just a few steps. "They are both very lucky, I mean you see what happens to cars when a deer hits it! Now imagine something heavier and lower to the ground."

The bear ran across the road and up into the fields next to another house. "The bear darted across the yard of one persons house and went into the yard of another. It was most likely looking for some food."

This is the latest of many bear sightings in Southern Kentucky. Wildlife leaders say the dry weather has forced bears to look for food in more populated areas. "The home owners may have left their trash out or had food around their house, that is what draws them in," explains Hutchinson. "It's kind of hilarious, we use dash cam videos for traffic stops but now it looks like we'll be using them for bear sightings too."

Detective Hutchinson tells us that the video has gone viral within the department at that the deputy has gained some bragging rights within the office. "You hear the deputy say wow, that's the way it is with us. We're pretty amazed that it was caught on video. But people need to remember that bears are not big dogs, you shouldn't try to pet them!"

The sheriff's office wants to remind people to not feed bears and to stay clear of them if you see them. They can be extremely dangerous and aggressive. Detective Hutchinson says if you see a bear to call 9-1-1. To help avoid them from coming to residential areas the sheriff's office urges people to put their trash out the night before and not leave it there for too long.
