SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) - It’s not uncommon for some to spend a lot of money marking the memory of a loved one.

“A nice saddle (flower arrangement) to go on top of a headstone can cost somewhere close to $100,” said Tricia Neal, the manager of Somerset Cemetery.

Yet some spend a lot more, possibly never thinking their way of honoring their loved one would be taken by thieves.

“They’re really upset. People have some to me in tears sometimes,” Neal said.

Police say the arrangements are taken because some know they can sell them for quick cash.

“Flea markets and other vending type facilities like that are the common culprits for trying to resell any type of stolen flowers,” said Captain Shannon Smith with Somerset Police.

Police say it’s a crime of opportunity. The thieves grab and go. But there are some things you can do to prevent this from happening to you.

“We do recommend that anyone who places flowers in a cemetery to mark those with something unique,” said Smith.

Police say you can also tie down some arrangements because thieves usually won’t mess with anything they can’t quickly take.

“It’s really a thoughtless thing to do. I really don’t understand. Why flowers?” asked Neal.

Police say some prosecutors will treat these crimes as grave violation which is considered a class d felony.
