NANCY, Ky (WKYT) – It was a violent day near this small, rural Pulaski Co. community, but some admit they saw it coming.

“A long, rocky relationship,” said Loren Tarter, Timmy Hislope’s step-father.

Family members say Timmy and Mary Hislope had trouble before and this morning, she called 911, screaming for help. Two troopers responded to their door that she answered but police say before they could act, he took her back inside and they believe he shot her.

“I knew in my heart that something was going to happen. I was afraid it was going to be him,” said Tarter.

Police say Timmy Hislope then came outside and pointed a gun at them. They returned fire, hitting him in the stomach. Mary Hislope was found dead inside.

“She was a good caring, person, would go out of her way to help someone in need,’ said George Gilmore, Mary Hislope’s son.

The Pulaski County sheriff confirms that domestic violence was a problem at the Okalona Dr. home and he says deputies were called there on several occasions.

Court records show two emergency protective orders against Hislope, one in 2007 that Mary Hislope signed and later dismissed, and one from a separate woman in 1998. Both detailed alleged threats. Yet family on both sides say the occasional rough relationship wasn’t what defined the couple.

“She just got a degree in social work. She loved helping homeless people. As much as she could,” said Gilmore.

“He cared very much about his son,” said Tarter. He went to great details to do things for his son. If anything happened...(he told me to watch after him)....which gave me a red flag that something was coming.”

That ‘something’ was an argument that ended Mary Hislope’s life..and put her husband in the hospital..with possible charges later.

Police do not have any new information about Timmy Hislope’s condition.
