Tobacco shoplifters caught on tape

"It makes you mad," said tobacco store owner David Coughlin.

Coughlin admits, he's been trusting of his customers, and his poodle April he keeps in the store isn't much of a watch-dog.

So it was disappointing when he started to notice missing cartons of cigarettes and cigars, and discovered he'd been fooled by men he thought were paying customers.

"They asked the prices of cigarettes and when you turned around, and looked at the prices of cigarettes, they loaded up," said Coughlin.

Seen on the surveillance video from inside Stop and Go Discount Tobacco on US 60, two men distract the owner while a third is putting cartons down his pants.

Police say it happened on July 12th, and again on the 20th.

"You want them to go out and get a job like everybody else," said Coughlin.

Police say they believe the men are no strangers to shoplifting, and may have hit other businesses as well.

"They know exactly what they're doing to their target, and how they're working it," said Officer Pat Melton, "you can tell they're doing this all over."

Authorities are asking other area store owners to be on the look-out.

"We don't know how much we've actually lost," said Coughlin, "we don't want it to happen to other businesses."

Coughlin hopes someone will recognize the men in the video and call police.

"We'd like to have them caught and something done with them," said Coughlin.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Versailles Police at (859) 873-3126.
