Bench stolen from Corbin grave found

The stolen bench from Corinth Cemetery in Corbin was found by a woman in Barbourville at Hutchins Cemetery on Monday.

When Jodie Nelson found out her son's bench was stolen from his grave in Corbin, she says it felt like she was reliving her son's death.

"It was the longest, from the time it got gone on Saturday until Monday evening, it was the worst moment for me to have to go through, or anybody," Nelson said.

Meanwhile, just two days later, Tammy Bargo was visiting her father's grave at Hutchins Cemetery in Barbourville. She says she was checking the grass because it was not growing properly when she visited days before. She says this was not part of her normal routine.

"I saw a squirrel statue. And I thought that wasn't there last thursday so I thought well what kind of statue is that, so I looked closer and saw another one. Then I saw the bench part laying on the ground," said Bargo.

Bargo saw the story about the stolen bench on WYMT.
She found Jodie Nelson's contact information and arranged to meet at the cemetery.

Nelson says as soon as she saw the bench, she knew it was Alonzo's.

"As soon as she drove up and saw it sitting there on the right, she, I mean I could hear her in the car. 'That's it! That's it!" said Bargo.

"Mama did it. You're bench is coming home baby boy. Your bench is coming home," Nelson said.

Nelson says she thinks her son would be proud of her. She says she plans to keep working to put an end to cemetery thefts.

Kentucky State Police are still investigating the theft.
