Whitley County Sheriff's deputies say the high speed chase started Sunday night when a deputy reportedly saw a car swerving on I-75 northbound about 4 miles south of Williamsburg. When the deputy tried to to stop the vehicle he says it took off, reaching speeds in excess of 126 mph.
The Sheriff's Office says the pursuit, while at speeds of 126 mph, lasted approximately 25 miles and crossed into Laurel County. Kentucky State Police laid spike strips, to stop the car, at a Laurel County weigh station.
Deputies say the car, a 2007 Honda, had been reported stolen out of Spartenburg, South Carolina. Upon a search of the vehicle, authorities say they found a bb gun, identical to a 9mm, and a police asp. Authorities arrested the driver, 28-year-old Jessie Andrew Gregory of South Carolina, with receiving stolen property over $10,000, two counts of wanton endangerment, two counts of criminal mischief, speeding 26 mph over, reckless driving, fleeing and evading, and operating on suspended.
Police also arrested a passenger in the car, 26-year-old Katie Nicole Shumpert of South Carolina. Deputies charged her with receiving stolen property over $10,000.
