Williamsburg, Ky. - University of the Cumberlands accumulated 559 yards of total offense while forcing five UVa-Wise turnovers en route to a 75-13 Mid-South east victory on Saturday.
The victorious Patriots scored 14 points before ever running an offensive play. Cumberlands scored its first touchdown of the day when Dekeldric Felton fielded a punt and raced 69 yards for a touchdown. One possession later, the Patriots’ Adam Hightower picked off Culen LaVoi returning it 29 yards for a score. On each touchdown, Justin Dyer was successful on the point after touchdown try.
From that point, Cumberlands never looked back as the number 11 team in the country scored 41 first half points. In the opening half, UVa-Wise scored twice as LaVoi hooked up with Terrance Younger for an 11 yard scoring strike. The other first half score for the Cavaliers came on a 12 yard touchdown pass from LaVoi to Ryan Bouldin. Place kicker Paul Melshen was successful on one of the two point after attempts, Melshen’s other attempt was blocked.
In the second half, the scoring outburst continued. The Mid-South’s leading rusher Terrance Cobb scored three touchdowns in the second half to finish with four rushing touchdowns on the day and 257 yards. In addition, Iquan Deed and Fred Byars Jr. also scored rushing touchdowns for Cumberlands.
For UVa-Wise, Younger caught 11 passes for a career high 258 yards and a touchdown while LaVoi completed 23 of 42 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Cumberlands improves its record to 7-1 and 3-1 in the Mid-South East. The loss drops UVa-Wise to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league action. The Cavs will return to action next Saturday when the team travels to Union College for a 1:30 PM kickoff.
