CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) - Corbin police are investigating a theft that happened while a woman stepped away from her vehicle at a gas station.

It only takes a few seconds to walk from your car to the cashier.

“Well I just think I'm looking at it. I'll just run straight in, and right back out,” said driver, Mary West.

But in those quick steps, are your belongings safe?

The owner of a SUV that stopped at the Kroger gas station on Cumberland Falls highway in Corbin quickly learned that they were not.

In just the few minutes that she was away from the vehicle, another woman grabbed the purse from inside.

William Rose, with the Corbin Police, says that, “after the victim got back into her car and left she noticed that her purse was gone and she came here to the police department to report it.”

The victim told police she did not lock the car, and others say they do not either.

“Well I don't. I didn't right then. I just stepped out, left my purse in there, run in, and gave him the money,” said West.

But police say it is a dangerous habit, and that they are seeing several other cases similar to this in the area.

They are encouraging everyone to park in well lit areas, and lock the doors; so that you aren't another victim.

Corbin police are still searching for the woman in the surveillance video and are asking anyone with information to give them a call.
