A former, high school football star is behind bars charged with murder.
The arrest of former Scott County football standout Percy Hargrove followed a wave of activity around Whitney Court in Winchester. Police began with an assault investigation, but by early afternoon the discovery of a body a few homes down the street prompted a death investigation.
Winchester Police had their hands full since before dawn when officers began a search for a suspect in an assault case. "At 4:33 this morning Winchester Police officers responded to 210 Whitney Court in regards to a domestic dispute," Winchester Police Captain James Hall said early Wednesday morning, "Neighbors heard what they reported to be a gunshot."
But evidence at the scene left investigators unclear what had happened. "We don't know for certain whether there was an actual gunshot. That's just a report that we have," Hall said.
The activity shook up the neighborhood, especially for Kimberly Mack, who lives a few homes down from the scene of the assault investigation. "I woke up this morning," Mack said, "A friend of mine called that lives up the street, and she said I needed to take my kids to school or take them up to the bus stop 'cause the street was blocked off, and I hadn't opened the door or anything."
Mack went about her day and was at lunch with a friend when the situation at home got even stranger. "My babysitter called 'cause she keeps my kids here and said that I needed to come home immediately," Mack continued, "When I came home, I couldn't come to my house. They brought my kids out to me, and we've been at my mom's. They just said that the area was not available for me to come into."
Mack would later learn investigators discovered the body of 33-year-old Andrew David Ingram underneath a deck behind her home. "No one ever thinks somebody's going to find a body underneath their back deck," Mack said, "I'm just grateful they didn't try to come in my house or knock on my door. I've got four kids. I don't want people coming in my house."
While investigators were finishing up on Whitney Court, police arrested a man with a celebrated history. 26-year-old Percy Hargrove was a star athlete at Scott County High School several years ago. Hargrove refused our request for an interview as he now faces charges of burglary and tampering with physical evidence, in addition to murder.
The Clark County Coroner's office tells us Andrew David Ingram died from what appears to be a gunshot wound. The state medical examiner in Frankfort will perform an autopsy.
