The smell in the air alerted neighbors that something was wrong.
"I could smell something like plastic, never dreamed of it being a fire," resident Nicy Branham said.
Fire crews got the call around 3:30 this morning of a fire near the apartments on Tyler Banks Court. When they got on scene the playground next to the apartments was burning to the ground. The slide, steps and rubber surrounding the playground were all burning.
"It could have caught one of these apartments on fire," Branham said.
Fire officials say the fire is suspicious. There are no nearby power lines or other obvious causes.
There is a second playground nearby in this apartment complex. It was untouched overnight.
If someone did set the fire, Nicy Branham knows they will eventually face justice.
"The good lord knows who done it, they won't get away with it," she said.
