Blue Grass Energy sends crews to Virginia for restoration aid

March 6, 2013 - Blue Grass Energy has dispatched six of its linemen to Virginia to assist with restoring power after the latest winter storm.

Early this morning, a group from BGEnergy left for Palmyra, Virginia to help Central Virginia Electric Cooperative restore power to its members. Of the co-op’s 35,000 members, 6,700 are without power as of this morning, according to the cooperative’s Web site.

“We are always willing to help other cooperatives needing assistance. Cooperation among cooperatives is actually one of the principals of BGEnergy”, said Robert Farmer, Vice President of Operations. “We know when we need help, one of our sister cooperatives will be here to help us.”

Cooperatives help one another in times of emergency. Cooperatives across the country use the same line system engineering standards, which means line crews from any part of the country can quickly help sister cooperatives in restoring power. BGEnergy is one of eleven electric cooperatives from Kentucky assisting in Virginia.

Weather forecasted for the Virginia area is for large amounts of heavy, wet snow with gusty winds. This combination could cause more outages across the region.

A total of 75 line techs and mechanics from 11 different Kentucky electric cooperatives are assisting with the power restorations.

Crews from Jackson Energy, Owen Electric, Shelby Energy, Licking Valley RECC, Salt River Electric, South Kentucky RECC, Kenergy, Nolin RECC and Farmers RECC are assisting.

Crews from Clark Energy and Blue Grass Energy are stationed at Central Virginia Electric Cooperative in Arrington, Virginia, where more than 10,000 customers are in the dark. Outage numbers for Virginia and surrounding states are expected to rise as the storm continues to move through the region.
