Winchester, Kentucky (June 13, 2012) – Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates will hold a special presentation at Clark Regional Medical Center tomorrow, Thursday, June 14 beginning at 12:00 p.m. The presentation will be held to celebrate Clark Regional Medical Center’s recognition as the 2011 Excellence in Tissue Donation Performance. For the third year in a row CRMC has had the highest number of tissue donors in the state of Kentucky. In 2011 CRMC had a fifty percent conversion rate compared to an average of twenty percent across the state.
Also to be announced during the presentation will be the recipient of the 2012 Eye Bank Association of America, Gift of Sight Award. The Gift of Sight Award is presented to an individual who works closely with the eye bank community, who gone above and beyond the call of duty in support of eye and corneal donation. This award honors a person who has had an impact on eye bank and made an extraordinary contribution to sight restoration.
More than 700 Kentucky residents are waiting to receive life-saving hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Last year in Kentucky, 100 people donated organs, resulting in the “Gift of Life” for over 300 individuals. However, 18 people die every day in the U.S. waiting for an organ transplant and the national waiting list currently is more than 113,000 people.
