Winchester, KY (September 20, 2011) –Today Winchester Community Leaders honored Arthur “Whitey” Walson for his dedication to Trust For Life with a reception in downtown Winchester. Clark Regional Medical Center donated $1000 to Trust for Life in honor of Walson’s role in founding the trust. “We are proud to recognize Mr. Walson’s lifelong advocacy for organ donation in Kentucky with a gift to advance the efforts of Trust for Life” said Kathy Love, CEO of Clark Regional Medical Center.
Walson’s dedication to tissue donation awareness began after losing a cousin awaiting a heart transplant. At the time, Walson served as Clark County Circuit Court Clerk and decided he didn’t want other families to suffer a similar loss. Walson felt that the Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks could make a difference by raising money through their offices for organ transplantation awareness. Walson and his fellow Circuit Clerks took his idea to the Legislature and the Clerk’s State Association. With the legislature’s support, Circuit Clerks and deputies now ask everyone obtaining a driver’s license or state ID if they would like to become an organ donor and to donate $1 to promote organ donation throughout Kentucky.
Trust for Life was the first program of its kind in the United States. Currently over 30 states have called the Trust to learn how it operates and to learn how they can create similar programs in their states. To date, Trust for Life has raised over $7 million. With the funds raised and advocacy efforts, Trust for Life has registered over one million Kentuckians on the state registry. To register as a donor today, please visit: www.donatelifeky.org.
