Study: Lawrenceburg Kentucky's safest city, Winchester next to last

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A new ranking of Kentucky cities found Lawrenceburg as the safest and Louisville, Winchester, and Newport as the most unsafe.

To come up with the list, Movoto Real Estate Blog used U.S. Census data to come up with a list of all cities in Kentucky with more than 10,000 people. Using the FBI's 2012 Uniform Crime Report, the blog looked at the numbers of murders, rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, thefts, and vehicle thefts.

The blog found Lawrenceburg and all the cities in the top ten had no reported murders in 2012. What set Lawrenceburg apart was its extremely low ranking for property crime.

Lawrenceburg residents had a 1 in 106 odds of being a victim of crime, according to the blog.

Following Lawrenceburg in the top ten were Fort Thomas, Independence, Jeffersontown, Mayfield, Glasgow, Berea, Madisonville, Shepherdsville and Radcliff.

In the middle of the list were Nicholasville (tied for 16th with Elizabethtown), Georgtown (18th), and Richmond (23rd).

Lexington ranked 27th putting it in the bottom ten. The blog found Lexington residents have a 1 in 21 chance of being a victim of crime.

The capital city of Frankfort ranked 29th safest.

Winchester (34th) ranked below Louisville (33rd) but ahead of Newport (35th) where residents have a 1 in 11 chance of being a victim of crime making it the least safe among cities with over 10,000 residents.
