Two killed in home invasion

Winchester Police continue to investigate a home invasion that quickly turned deadly.

They say two men broke into a duplex early Monday morning, on Redwing Drive, just off the Bypass in Winchester.

Police say gunfire then broke out between the intruders and the man who lived at the home.

Investigators say Phillip Howard, the man who lived at the home, and one of the intruders, Demontez Cowherd, later died.

We're told Cowherd had just been released from jail about three months ago.

Winchester Police say when officers arrived at the home, it was evident someone broke in.

"There's definite signs of force to the residence," Captain James Hall of Winchester Police said. "It was a definite break-in."

Police say Cowherd shot Howard, and Howard then shot back, hitting Cowherd.

Both men were taken to Clark Regional Medical Center, where Howard died.

Investigators say Cowherd later died at UK Hospital.

Police say neighbors saw the second intruder leave the home after they heard gunshots.

Police say those neighbors told them that man had a weapon and left in a Dodge Magnum.

Lexington Police are working with Winchester Police to see if a person who checked into a hospital in Lexington with a gunshot wound could be the second intruder.

Howard's friends told us he was about to graduate from technical college in Lexington.

WKYT has learned Cowherd just got out of the Fayette County Detention Center in February, after serving three months for a probation violation.
