WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - Winchester Police are after two men they say assaulted and robbed a well known member of the community. J.C. Young was hospitalized on Saturday following the attack.

Young is 72-years-old and owns South Main Grocery. Residents can't believe anyone would do that to him.

The grocery store is a staple in Winchester. Owners J.C. Young and his wife make it a point to give back whenever they have a chance.

"They are wonderful people," said Winchester Resident Betty Fetzer.

Fetzer has only been a resident of Winchester for three years but she has already experienced the family's kindness. Right after she had knee surgery and couldn't walk, Young delivered three days worth of food to her home.

Young's generosity is what makes him so beloved. It may have played a role in what happened over the weekend. Police say he was driving in the area of Washington Street and Burns Avenue. Two men flagged him down, Young offered them a ride. One man pulled out a gun and the other assaulted Young, sending him to the hospital.

Winchester resident Kermit Trapp wonders why anyone would do that to Young.

"J.C. would have been more than happy to give these people some food or whatever they needed," said Trapp "He was a guy that really bent over backwards for most people."

The Winchester Police Department is investigating the case, anyone with information is asked to call police at 745-7400.

Police say the suspects also stole more than $75.

There's no official word on his condition at this time.
