Company officials say the Winchester Kmart will be one of many across the nation that will shut down.
Sears Holdings, which owns both Sears and Kmart, has released a list of stores they plan to close. Three of those stores are here in Kentucky. The Kmart here in Winchester will close, as well as the Hazard Kmart and the Middlesboro Sears Hardlines store. While Kmart workers here in Winchester declined to go on camera, shoppers said losing the store is a big blow to the city.
"It just breaks my heart for them. They're out of a job and we're out of another store to go to. It just keeps getting worse, it's not getting better," says Virginia Abney.
Company officials say they don't have a set time frame for the closures. They said they're not sure how many people work at this store, but they say a typical store has 40-80 workers. Those workers will be offered severance and will be notified of openings at nearby stores, however they will have to reapply for those jobs.
