UK head coach Mark Stoops holds virtual news conference on first day of practice
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Head coach Mark Stoops got to talk about UK football and many other issues surrounding college athletics.
Stoops held his first press conference in months on Tuesday:
The press conference also came on the first day of practice for the Wildcats after weeks of just having walk-throughs and video sessions and workouts. Stoops said Terry Wilson looks good and he likes what he sees out of an experienced core returning.
Stoops was also asked if the season would begin because of the on-going pandemic because of so many unknown factors.
“I am personally optimistic that we’re going to get started on time,” Stoops said. “Again, this is a very fluid situation and we will take it day by day. We were excited to get out there and practice today. We certainly have a lot of tests between now and the first game that need to happen throughout our conference. We will do the best we can to keep everybody as safe as humanly possible.”
Stoops also said he really likes the depth and experience returning for the wildcats. It takes time to build depth and he thinks the depth chart is stacked with excellent players.
“You know, it can only challenge us even more. It is what it is John. As you know, we work through camp getting all of our players a lot of reps, getting them prepared, and I do feel like this is the deepest team since I’ve been here,” Stoops said. “We are a deep team with some experience and that has to help when you’re playing 10 conference games because we all know how difficult that will be. We know how taxing that will be on our players and our coaches.”
UK plays Auburn in the opener and still no word on the eligibility of Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood who has been at UK since December. Coach Stoops says they are waiting on him to be cleared.
